Lack of air conditioning is a big topic.
Fans are $23. Order one ASAP if you get there in summertime. Google the fan direct program for tdcj to order a fan.
Not all units allow personal fans. If your loved one is housed in a “pod”, a dorm style room with 14+ bunk beds, then there are not enough outlets and fans will not be allowed. They will have commercial fans in the pod.
Inmates will shower with all their clothes on 3x per day to try to cool down.
They will take a towel and get it wet with toilet water or sink water, lay it down on the concrete and lay on top of it.
Some units will pemit the inmates to be in their boxers only, and some will not.
There are respite areas that they can ask to go to if they need to cool down, but my LO said they can’t always accommodate those requests.
Usually the visitation areas are air conditioned, so if your LO goes there for a video visit, he may not look hot and sweaty, but he will be once he goes back to his area if it’s not air conditioned..
You can contact the warden at your loved one’s unit or the ombudsman.
Garza West Air Conditioning

- Unit D is not airconditioned
Holliday
- Visitation has AC, but it’s not so good and it’s still hot in there.
